From the School of Chemistry:

CEDENNA joins the International Year of Chemistry

June 3, 2011

The event, organized by academics from the Universidad de Chile, Universidad de Santiago de Chile and the Universidad Andrés Bello, through CEDENNA, will take place July 19th and 20th 2011 at the National and International Event Center at USACH.

The UN declared 2011 as the International Year of Chemistry, with the objective of celebrating the achievements of Chemistry and its contribution to humanity. It is also the centennial of awarding the Nobel Prize to Marie Curie and thus constitutes an opportunity to recognize the contribution of women to science. As well this year commemorates the centennial of the founding of the International Association of Chemical Societies, the precursor of the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry and also celebrates the 350 anniversary of the publication in 1661 of Robert Boyle’s book The Sceptical Chymist, which marks the origin of chemistry as a modern science.

The celebration of the International Year of Chemistry (IYC) in 2011 has the motto “Chemistry: our life, our future”. The year will be commemorated with activities around the world to highlight the importance of chemistry in sustainability of the planet and improvement in the quality of our lives.

In commemoration, the Molecular Magnetism area of the Center for the Development of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (CEDENNA) has organized the School of Chemistry to take place in July of this year. The School is aimed at high school students from different schools in the area of the capital, Santiago. “The idea is to inform students about the basic concepts of Chemistry and extrapolate these to nanoscience, encouraging students to see Chemistry as a science with major applications in the technology of the future”, commented the coordinator of the event and Head of the Molecular Magnetism Area, Evgenia Spodine (Faculty of Chemical and Pharmaceutical Sciences, Universidad de Chile).

Organized by academics from the Universidad de Chile, the Universidad de Santiago de Chile and the Universidad Andrés Bello, through CEDENNA, the School of Chemistry will be held on July 19th and 20th 2011 at the National and International Events Center of USACH. More than 100 secondary students from the Metropolitan Region are expected to attend and will have the opportunity to learn basic concepts about chemistry and nanoscience and their future technological applications.

The School of Chemistry is in the framework of a series of activities to be undertaken by Universidad de Santiago de Chile (USACH) through the Faculty of Chemistry and Biology in the context of the International Year of Chemistry. The events planned for this year include science fairs, workshops, expositions and meetings, among others, designed to generate enthusiasm and inform the university community about the scope and importance of this discipline.

Schedule of AIQ – USACH activities:

  • First school competition for scientific projects, which seeks to promote science in schools to conclude the Third Science Fair (presentation of projects until May)
  • The Atomic City Blog, a website for scientific dissemination that describes the presence, daily use and characteristics of 365 molecules present in daily life (http://laciudadatomica.blogspot.com/)
  • Workshop “One molecule, one person: A Hundred Years of Chemistry History”. exhibitions for students who want to learn about the presence of chemistry in our daily lives (first semester 2011).
  • – Chemistry school to give students the opportunity to learn basic concepts of chemistry and nanoscience, together with their future technological applications (July).
  • Exhibition of historic photographs, a collection of photos of the Faculty of Chemistry and Biology over the years (August).
  • National Meeting of Chemistry Students (September).
  • 3rd Science Fair, talks and experiments of students and academics of the Faculty for the dissemination of the science among secondary students and the general public (October).
