Rare earths are present in technologies that are part of everyday life, from mobile phones and computers to solar panels, electric vehicles, and defense systems. Although they are essential for the energy transition and technological development, their global production is highly concentrated, with China controlling nearly 70% of the market.
With the aim of bringing this topic closer to the scientific community, students, and interested professionals, CEDENNA will kick off its 2026 Seminar Series with the talk Rare Earths: From the Lab to the Market, given by Dr. Walter Canon, a CEDENNA researcher and professor at Universidad Bernardo O’Higgins.
The event will take place on Thursday, June 25, from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM, in the Auditorium of the Research Centers Building of Universidad de Santiago de Chile.
In his presentation, Dr. Canon will address the strategic importance of these elements for the global economy, the opportunities they represent for Chile, and the scientific and technological challenges associated with their processing and value addition.
Chile has geological deposits and tailings with concentrations of interest, as well as mining projects under development linked to rare earths, opening up new possibilities for research, innovation, and the generation of added value in the country.
A PhD in Inorganic Chemistry and specialist in coordination chemistry and advanced materials, Walter Canon conducts research aimed at understanding the molecular composition of critical elements for technological applications, helping connect scientific knowledge with productive challenges of national interest.
