Physics in two dimensions. Two-dimensional materials, formed by single layers of atoms, have sparked great interest in basic and applied science ever since the exfoliation of a single layer of graphene was achieved in 2004, an achievement that earned Andre Geim and Konstantin Novoselov the 2010 Nobel Prize in Physics.
Their use has expanded into fields as diverse as electronics, biomedical sensors, and materials engineering.
