Back to CEDENNA in the Media

Saturday, November 29, Channel 24 Horas TVN broadcast live from the laboratories of Center for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (CEDENNA), showing the practical session of the first nanoscience and nanotechnology course for physicians, an unprecedented initiative in Chile and a benchmark in Latin America.

The visit coincided with a major milestone for national science: CEDENNA has just been awarded the ANID Applied Research Centers competition, one of the most competitive instruments in the country, aimed at supporting centers that carry out excellent research with high impact on national development.

During the broadcast, Dr. Dora Altbir, National Prize for Exact Sciences winner and director of the Center, highlighted the importance of this award, which will allow CEDENNA to strengthen its work in strategic areas and plan a new cycle of applied research, technology transfer and collaboration with the public and private sectors.

This recognition confirms:

  • The The scientific and technological quality of the Center.

  • Its role as a Latin American benchmark in nanotechnology.

  • Its capacity to generate applied solutions in health, energy, mining, the environment and advanced materials.

  • The State’s confidence in the national impact of its work.

The director stressed that this new cycle will make it possible to expand frontier projects, boost advanced training and consolidate nano tools that are already being used in clinical, environmental and industrial settings.

Pioneering course: physicians make nanoparticles in CEDENNA’s laboratories

24 Horas followed the practical session of the first nanoscience and nanotechnology course for health professionals, developed by CEDENNA in agreement with the Chilean Medical Association.

During the visit, the following was recorded:

  • The Synthesis of silver nanoparticles carried out by the participating physicians under the guidance of the center’s researchers. They then observed these nanoparticles under the center’s electron microscopes.

  • The work of the environmental pollution laboratory, which has equipment unique in Latin America to measure nanomaterials in the air.

  • Modules on nanobiomedicine and nanosafety, where the professionals observed clinical applications, safety protocols and nano tools for diagnosis and advanced therapies.

The physicians interviewed highlighted the relevance of the course for incorporating these technologies into clinical practice, especially because of the clarity, depth and applicability of the content.

Impact for the country: applied science at the service of health

The coverage made it possible to show thousands of people that nanotechnology is already present in concrete solutions that benefit the population, from new treatment strategies and advanced diagnostic techniques to the measurement of ultrafine pollutants and experimental developments in nanobiomedicine.

This course, the only one of its kind in Chile and a pioneer in the region, is part of CEDENNA’s strategy to bring frontier science closer to the clinical world, preparing medical professionals for the growing impact of nanotechnology on modern medicine.

New editions for 2026

Dr. Altbir confirmed that registration is already open for new editions of the course, which include: online theoretical training, practical modules in CEDENNA’s laboratories, and an upcoming special summer edition aimed at professionals with more availability in January and February.
