The Center for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (CEDENNA) will hold a talk open to the community on Thursday, December 11, at 4:00 PM, at the REMS Research Centers Building Auditorium, as part of the closing activities for the 2025 Year of Quantum. The presentation will be given by Dr. Guillermo Romero Huenchuñir, a faculty member of the Department of Physics at Universidad de Santiago de Chile and a CEDENNA researcher.

The talk, titled “Quantum Tunneling in Superconducting Circuits: The 2025 Nobel Prize in Physics,” will review one of the most relevant advances in contemporary physics: the phenomenon of quantum tunneling applied to superconducting circuits, a fundamental basis for the development of superconducting qubits, Josephson junctions, and new quantum computing and simulation platforms.

The 2025 Nobel Prize in Physics highlighted essential contributions in this field, recognizing work that has made it possible to understand and control charge and phase processes in superconducting systems, paving the way for more stable, faster, and more scalable quantum technologies.

In his presentation, Dr. Romero will address the physical principles underlying quantum tunneling in this type of device, the impact of the award-winning research, and the challenges currently facing the development of next-generation quantum architectures.

“Progress in superconducting circuits has been key to turning theoretical concepts into real quantum devices. Understanding how tunneling occurs at the charge and phase level is essential for improving qubit performance and expanding the frontiers of quantum computing,” says the researcher.

The talk will be streamed via Zoom for participants from other regions, and those wishing to attend in person can register by writing to [email protected]l or scanning the QR code available on the official poster.

This activity is part of CEDENNA’s commitment to bringing advanced scientific knowledge closer to the university community and strengthening Chile’s role in the development of emerging quantum technologies.
