CEDENNA researcher and director of the Institute of Basic Sciences of the Faculty of Engineering and Sciences at Universidad Diego Portales, Dr. Roberto Lavín, will present advances that make it possible to improve the strength, durability and performance of materials used in construction.
The applications of nanotechnology in the development of construction materials will be the central topic of the next CEDENNA Seminar, to be held on Thursday, August 27, at 4:00 p.m., at the Faculty of Engineering and Sciences of Universidad Diego Portales.
The talk, titled “Nanotechnology in construction materials: from microstructure to macroscopic performance in wood and concrete”, will be given by Dr. Roberto Lavín, CEDENNA researcher and director of the Institute of Basic Sciences of the UDP Faculty of Engineering and Sciences.
The presentation will explain how the incorporation and control of nanomaterials make it possible to modify the properties of cementitious and lignocellulosic matrices, improving characteristics such as mechanical strength, durability and protection against fire, moisture, abrasion and biological deterioration.
The researcher will also present results of studies carried out at Universidad Diego Portales, including a FONDEF project and recent work on the functionalization of wood through ultrasound-assisted in situ synthesis processes.
This research seeks to understand the mechanisms by which nanoparticles modify the microstructure of materials and contribute to the design of construction solutions with different functions and technology transfer possibilities.
The activity will be held in person at the Auditorium of the Faculty of Engineering and Sciences of Universidad Diego Portales, located at Avenida Ejército Libertador 441, Santiago. It will also be streamed online for participants outside Santiago or unable to attend in person.
