CEDENNA’s Nanosafety Unit took part at the end of June in an intense session of the OECD Working Party on Manufactured Nanomaterials (WPMN), as our country’s representatives to the international organization.
On this occasion, one of the important aspects of the work of researchers from different countries focused on reviewing future action topics and their prioritization in the area of nanosafety activities the WPMN should consider.
Dr. Mauricio Escudey, principal investigator of CEDENNA’s Nanosafety Unit, mentions among the priorities that drew the most agreement: developing tools and models to estimate, predict and quantify nanoparticle emissions into the environment, as well as assessing and quantifying human exposure (workers and consumers) and environmental risk during normal use of products made of or containing nanomaterials. Another aspect of high interest involves identifying and generating comprehensive and complete data on the physicochemical properties of nanomaterials before, during and after exposure in biological or environmental matrices.
CEDENNA’s participation, through its Nanosafety Unit, is part of ongoing work within the OECD aimed at analyzing possible safety problems caused by nanomaterials and ensuring that approaches are high quality, science-based and internationally harmonized.
