- The Center positions itself as the top institution linked to the university world in innovation, surpassed only by a state entity (INIA).
The Center for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (CEDENNA) ranks second nationwide in innovation in the SCImago Institutions Rankings (SIR) 2026, also establishing itself as the leading university benchmark for innovation in Chile.
The SIR innovation indicator evaluates the performance of universities and research centers based on their ability to generate patents and transfer scientific knowledge to technological applications.
“This recognition validates a working model that brings together science, technology, industry and public policy. Chile needs to move towards a knowledge-based economy, and nanotechnology is a key tool for generating innovation with productive and social impact”, said CEDENNA director Dora Altbir, who is also director of Institutional Projects at Universidad Diego Portales.
Since its creation in 2009, CEDENNA has worked to close the gap between science and technology. It has more than 20 laboratories where advanced research is carried out and a nanosafety laboratory unique in the country, which has allowed it to be at the frontier of innovation.
The SCImago ranking, which combines research, innovation and social impact indicators, uses patent and scientific publication data to measure how knowledge translates into concrete technological advances and impact on society.
