The journal “Crystal Growth & Design” highlighted the researcher of CEDENNA’s Nanostructure Chemistry line and full professor at Universidad Andrés Bello, Dra. Verónica Paredes, among the world’s leading women in publications in the field of crystal engineering.

“The development of this field has allowed me to consolidate myself academically and as a researcher in coordination polymers,” explains the full professor at Universidad Andrés Bello, commenting on this recognition, which she attributes to “perseverance, dedication and discipline at work, resilience to face challenges, creativity to overcome the usual obstacles of science, academic work, and the aptitudes and skills I have developed throughout my career.”
Dr. Diego Venegas, principal investigator of this research line at the center, said this was “great news, but not a surprise.”
He notes that in recent years the researcher has devoted her career to studying the structural and magnetic properties of chiral coordination polymers, that is, structures that can potentially deflect polarized light. “Verónica has always stood out as a very determined woman with a strong character, which has allowed her to excel among her peers. For CEDENNA’s line 3, which has more women than men (5 of 9 researchers), this is great news and an encouragement for the other women in the line,” he says proudly.
In its latest issue, the journal highlights the work of women at the forefront of this research field worldwide, hoping each of them will inspire other women to keep contributing to the field of crystals.
The editors explain that the idea for this special issue arose in late June 2022, when gender bias in chemistry publishing and the underrepresentation of women in publications were discussed, as well as the experiences of discrimination and prejudice women face throughout the research and publication process.
Crystal Growth & Design (usually abbreviated Cryst. Growth Des.) is a scientific journal published since 2001 by the American Chemical Society, devoted to contributions in chemistry and chemical engineering on crystal growth, crystal engineering and the industrial application of crystalline materials. It covers theoretical and experimental studies on physical, chemical and biological phenomena and processes related to the design, growth and application of crystalline materials.
