On a new anniversary of the death of Marie Curie, the renowned Polish physicist and pioneer in the study of radiation, Dr. Dora Altbir, director of the CEDENNA Foundation and 2019 National Prize for Exact Sciences winner, published an opinion column in Radio Cooperativa titled “Following the example of Marie Curie”.
In her text, Dr. Altbir pays tribute to the life and work of Curie, the first woman to receive a Nobel Prize and the only person to win two in different scientific disciplines. Through this historical figure, the researcher reflects on the current challenges that women still face in the world of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), especially in Chile.
“The story of Marie Curie remains a powerful source of inspiration. Her life was a constant invitation to curiosity, study and the pursuit of knowledge as a tool to overcome fear and uncertainty,” Altbir writes in the column. She also stresses that, although female participation in STEM has increased, significant gaps still persist compared to other OECD countries.
In this regard, Dr. Altbir calls for making visible and celebrating the achievements of women scientists, as a way to inspire new generations and move towards a more inclusive and equitable science.
