As part of the CEDENNA Seminar Series, distinguished CBA researcher from the Department of Biology Dr. Claudio Acuña gave a lively and interesting talk on the 2023 Nobel Prize in Medicine awarded to American immunologist Dr. Drew Weissman and Hungarian biochemist Dr. Katalin Karikó.

They received this recognition for their discoveries concerning nucleoside base modifications that enabled the development of effective mRNA (messenger ribonucleic acid) vaccines against Covid-19.

Hungarian biochemist Dr. Katalin Karikó spent several years developing key advances for the Moderna and BioNTechshots, while immunologist Dr. Drew Weissman worked together with Dr. Karikó and made mRNA-based therapies possible, thus incorporating them into the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines.

The activity was held in the Auditorium of the Rector Eduardo Morales Research Centers Building, where the center’s researchers and students were able to exchange ideas by asking questions at the end of the seminar.
