This week Dr. Marlen Gutiérrez Cutiño, researcher of the Nanostructure Chemistry Line of the Center for the Development of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, CEDENNA, gave an interesting and entertaining talk on Inorganic Materials and the Environment to 4th-year high school students from Colegio IDOP in La Cisterna.
On this occasion she explained in a didactic way concepts such as what a nanoparticle is and how big a nanometer is, in order to define nanoscience and the importance of the nanoscale. “Important properties of materials, such as electrical, optical, thermal and mechanical properties, are determined by the way molecules and atoms assemble at the nanometric scale into larger structures.” She added that the most interesting thing about the nanoscale is that nanomaterials exhibit different properties from larger particles of the same material.
Finally, she noted that at CEDENNA science is done at the service of Chile and its people, seeking innovative, reliable and safe nanometric solutions to problems in various sectors such as medicine, the environment, agribusiness, the food industry and energy, citing examples of projects.
