With deep sorrow, the Center for the Development of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (CEDENNA) announces the passing of José d’Albuquerque e Castro (1952–2025), a distinguished Brazilian physicist and member of our International Advisory Committee, on August 12, 2025.

With a bachelor’s and master’s degree in Physics from the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro and a PhD in Mathematical Physics from Imperial College, University of London, Professor d’Albuquerque e Castro devoted his career to the study of magnetic and transport properties in nanostructured systems.

His close relationship with CEDENNA was reflected in numerous visits to Chile, where he learned first-hand about the work of our laboratories and contributed his strategic vision to consolidate our center as a hub for nanoscience and nanotechnology development in the country.

In Brazil, he developed a brilliant academic career at the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, promoted the training of specialists in Latin America and was awarded the National Order of Scientific Merit for his contribution to science.

At CEDENNA we express our sincere condolences to his family, colleagues and friends, and we are deeply grateful for his legacy and his valuable contribution to our scientific community.
