Nanotechnology in mining and lithium was the topic addressed by Dra. Dora Altbir Drullinsky, director of Fundación CEDENNA, during her participation in the “10th International Conference on Lithium, Industrial Minerals and Energy IWLiME 2023” recently held in Antofagasta, organized by Universidad de Antofagasta and SQM.

The event aimed to highlight the latest research and developments in the region known as the “lithium triangle” (Argentina, Bolivia and Chile), especially in relation to industrial and strategic minerals, with a special focus on lithium.

During her presentation, Dr. Altbir stressed the fundamental role nanotechnology plays in improving materials and systems for mining, and in developing applications including coatings, multiple sensors to increase safety, water and soil remediation, and energy storage, among others.

She emphasized that lithium is “a great opportunity for nanoscience and nanotechnology because it is possible to prepare promising materials in Chile from waste and explore new applications in a wide range of areas.”

She highlighted the advantages of lithium at the nanoscale, such as its high electrical conductivity, nonlinear optical response and greater energy storage capacity. She also mentioned various applications of nano-lithium, such as the integration of electronic and mechanical devices, improved bone substitutes, and optical sensors and detectors, among others.

Special attention was drawn by the CEDENNA/SQM collaboration to produce lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) nanoparticles from recycled lithium phosphate, with the aim of using these nanoparticles as cathode material in batteries.

The “10th International Conference on Lithium, Industrial Minerals and Energy IWLiME 2023” was an ideal forum to address topics such as lithium battery manufacturing, the circular economy and the industry’s environmental considerations, sustainability and hydrogeology, among other key issues for the development of this industry, which is key to the country’s development.
