An enjoyable and fruitful session took place on the morning of Thursday, August 31, at CEDENNA with the 2023 Alumni Workshop, where current and former graduate students of the center received tools, advice and experiences that can be very useful on their path as professionals dedicated to science and research.
After the welcome by CEDENNA’s alternate director, Dr. María José Galotto, a group of researchers gave talks designed to guide attendees in a practical way across various areas. “Survival skills for scientists”, a presentation based on the book by F. Rosei and T. Johnston and complemented with personal experiences, opened the panel with Dr. Rafael González. Dr. Francisco Muñoz then presented basic strategies and actions for this scientific “survival”. After a coffee break, the morning continued with Dr. Andrés Vargas, who explored what recruiters value in a CV.
Dr. Francisco Rodríguez focused on the challenges of pitching a project to companies, emphasizing the aspects to consider in order to successfully build relationships with productive sectors and partner organizations. The last talk was given by Dr. Cristián Vilos, who shared several keys to strengthening professional profiles and achieving successful employment.
Javier Salazar, from the Nanomedicine Laboratory, said the workshop was very interesting and useful because “it greatly helped focus the uncertainties one has about how to find a place as a PhD in the academic and/or work environment.”
Javiera Vargas, a student at the Nanomagnetism Laboratory, valued this initiative as an opportunity to learn about researchers’ experiences, so that young scientists can better approach their future path.
Amanda Humeres, a student in the Master’s in Food Technology, highlighted that the workshop allowed students and alumni to gather tools, experiences and advice to apply in their careers in a very didactic and enjoyable way. “Each researcher’s account was super interesting: how to find your way around academia, how to apply, how to write a good CV… in short, it was a very good experience,” she said at the end of the session.
