“This forum is super important because it allows us to see CEDENNA’s competencies and capabilities and thus determine where we can apply them in industry,” explained SQM’s Innovation and Development Manager, Osvaldo Yáñez, speaking to a group of business representatives at the 2023 Nanotechnology Fair organized by the Center for the Development of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, CEDENNA.

He added that “if we could combine the competencies of the various centers like this one, it would be even better and we would form a much more competent whole. But as a country, we are asleep. We have a big challenge ahead.”

During the event, held last Thursday, June 29, leaders from different sectors learned about the developments of the country’s largest center in the field, including sensors to detect pesticides in fruits and vegetables; sensors to detect uncrushables in mining and machinery wear; the use of nanotechnology to treat cancer; lightweight structural concrete with nanotechnology; “green nanotechnology” in plant biology to develop technologies that can improve plant efficiency, productivity and resistance to climate change; packaging with properties to extend food shelf life while maintaining quality, and high-end batteries, among others, as well as CEDENNA’s contributions to nanosafety under OECD standards.

“Some time ago we decided, as a company, to move up the value chain. We are very good at extraction and at copying external experiences, but to add higher value we need to add the knowledge and competencies of our scientists and universities,” Yáñez noted.
