In a new “Talking with” session, CEDENNA member and academic at Universidad Bernardo O’Higgins, Dr. Walter Cañón, took us into the world of lanthanide-based coordination compounds, also known as rare earths, which exhibit interesting magnetic and optical properties. In the first case, lanthanides show slow relaxation of magnetization, a characteristic of magnetic materials used to store information, the scientist explains.

Luminescence

“From the point of view of optical properties, these systems also have luminescent properties. Thanks to this, LED (Light Emitting Diode) devices can be manufactured, and by combining different lanthanides it is possible to generate white light,” says Dr. Walter Cañón.
The seminar was followed by interesting questions and discussions.
