The director of the Center for the Development of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology and National Prize in Exact Sciences winner, Dr. Dora Altbir Drullinsky, was elected as a new Full Member of the Chilean Academy of Sciences, an honor held by only 36 scientists nationwide, at its extraordinary session on January 13.

The appointment was significant, as it adds a fifth woman to a group so far made up mostly of men (32 of 36). At the same time, a researcher from the regions was also selected: academic and director of the Millennium Institute of Oceanography (IMO), Osvaldo Ulloa.

The Chilean Academy of Sciences is one of the six Academies that make up the Instituto de Chile, and its mission is to bring together the leading exponents of national science to debate the development of knowledge in the country and propose actions for its expansion. Its members are of four classes (full, national corresponding, foreign corresponding and honorary), with the full members forming the core of the institution, now joined by CEDENNA’s director.
