CEDENNA opens call for the 2026 Images of the Nanoworld Contest

The Center for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, CEDENNA, invites its community to take part in the 2026 CEDENNA Images Contest, a call to gather images inspired by the nanoworld and turn them into resources for communicating nanoscience and nanotechnology to different audiences. The works may come from microscopy, simulations or other scientific techniques, and may be artistically enhanced. Through them, CEDENNA seeks to show nanoscale phenomena, structures and materials in a visual, attractive and understandable way for students, educational communities and the general public. The selected images may be included in CEDENNA calendars, publications, exhibitions, presentations, educational activities, social media and other outreach materials, always with the corresponding credit.

A contest with a track record and a public vocation

The CEDENNA Images Contest has been held for several years and has become a meeting point between science, art and outreach. The initiative invites researchers to share images obtained through microscopy, simulations and other scientific techniques that make it possible to observe structures and phenomena often invisible to the human eye. The selected works come to life in the Images of the Nanoworld exhibition, presented in educational and cultural spaces to bring scientific research closer to students, teachers and the general public. They are also part of the digital book Images of the Nanoworld, which brings together outstanding works from different editions and can be downloaded free of charge from www.cedenna.cl. The contest is part of CEDENNA’s ongoing work to link science with society. Through the images, the Center shows that nanoscience and nanotechnology can be observed, understood and appreciated, in addition to contributing to areas such as health, energy and the development of new materials.

Prizes and evaluation

Three winning images will be selected, considering their visual and technical quality, creativity, originality and capacity to contribute to the communication of nanoscience and nanotechnology. Each work must include a title and an educational description of up to 500 characters, understandable for primary and secondary school students and the general public.

How to participate

Submissions will be open until 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, October 29, 2026. The completed form, the original image and the enhanced version must be sent in a single email to [email protected]
