The board of the Chilean Physics Society (SOCHIFI), in consultation with the Scientific Committee of the XXIII Chilean Physics Symposium, decided to award the Chilean Physics Society Medal to CEDENNA researcher Dr. Patricio Vargas, for "his outstanding contributions both in the field of Physics, as in the progress of SOCHIFI”. The distinction was given to him in a ceremony that took place in the context of the XXIII Chilean Physics Symposium.

Dr. Vargas is a researcher at CEDENNA's Magnetic Nanostructures Line, has a degree in Physics from the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, a Master's in Physics from the same university and a PhD in Physics from the Max Planck Institute in Stuttgart, Germany. Between 1978 and 1999 he was a professor at the University of Santiago de Chile. From the year 2000 to date, he is a Full Professor at the Federico Santa María Technical University in the Valparaíso Region.

He has worked on the study of the electronic structure of materials and, particularly, has participated in the development of a method for the study of disordered systems, known as LMTO (Linear Muffin Tin Orbitals). His work in the area of image processing has allowed him to contribute to applied research in Medical Physics, an area in which he has published several works.

In this regard, he also has a patent granted for a method to correct medical images in a SPECT (Single Photon Emission Computational Tomography) study of a patient's organ, for its subsequent tomographic reconstruction. For 7 years he was Principal Investigator of the Millennium Nucleus Physics of Condensed Matter, focusing on the area of magnetic nano-structures and also on the development of a prototype to perform brain examinations in nuclear medicine. He is the author of 150 WoS publications and has trained 10 doctors in the specialty.
