On Saturday, November 29, Canal 24 Horas TVN broadcast live from the laboratories of the Center for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (CEDENNA), showing the development of the practical day of the first nanoscience and nanotechnology course for doctors, an unprecedented initiative in Chile and a benchmark in Latin America.
The visit coincided with a major milestone for national science: CEDENNA has just won the ANID competition for Applied Research Centers, one of the most competitive instruments in the country, intended to support centers that carry out excellent research with high impact for national development.
During the meeting, Dr. Dora Altbir, National Prize for Exact Sciences recipient and director of the Center, highlighted the importance of this award, which will allow CEDENNA to strengthen its work in strategic areas and project a new cycle of applied research, technology transfer and collaboration with public and private sectors.
This recognition confirms:
-
The Center's scientific and technological excellence.
-
Its role as a leading Latin American center for nanotechnology.
-
Its capacity to generate applied solutions in health, energy, mining, the environment, and advanced materials.
-
The government's confidence in the national impact of its work.
The director emphasized that this new cycle will allow for the expansion of cutting-edge projects, enhance advanced training, and consolidate nano-tools that are already being used in clinical, environmental, and industrial settings.
Pioneering course: doctors manufacture nanoparticles in CEDENNA laboratories
24 Horas covered the practical session of the first nanoscience and nanotechnology course for healthcare professionals, developed by CEDENNA in partnership with the Chilean Medical Association. During the visit, the following was recorded:
-
The synthesis of silver nanoparticles was carried out by participating physicians under the guidance of researchers at the center.
-
These nanoparticles were then observed using the center's electron microscopes.
-
The work of the environmental pollution laboratory, which has equipment unique in Latin America for measuring nanomaterials in the air.
-
Nanobiomedicine and nanosafety modules, where professionals observed clinical applications, safety protocols, and nano-tools for advanced diagnosis and therapies.
The doctors interviewed highlighted the relevance of the course for incorporating these technologies into clinical practice, especially due to the clarity, depth, and applicability of the content.
Impact on the country: science applied to the service of health
The coverage allowed thousands of people to see that nanotechnology is already present in concrete solutions that benefit the population, from new treatment strategies, advanced diagnostic techniques, measurement of ultrafine contaminants, to experimental developments in nanobiomedicine.
This course, unique in Chile and a pioneer in the region, is part of CEDENNA's strategy to bring cutting-edge science closer to the clinical world, preparing medical professionals for the growing impact of nanotechnology on modern medicine.
New versions for 2026
Dr. Altbir confirmed that registration is now open for new versions of the course, which include: online theoretical training, practical modules in CEDENNA laboratories, and an upcoming special summer version aimed at professionals with greater availability in January and February.
