More than 30 companies learned about the potential of this scientific discipline and the funding from Corfo-Innova to use it in their developments
Pleasantly surprised by the multiple applications that nanotechnology can contribute to the development of their companies, the representatives of more than thirty productive entities who toured the CEDENNA laboratories to learn first-hand about the way in which the applications of Chilean nanoscience they can help them improve their performances and solve their challenges.
The meeting was generated by the Center in conjunction with Corfo-Innova, whose executives explained to the attendees the ways in which the corporation can finance projects that arise from this link with CEDENNA, which facilitated the emergence of more than a dozen links between researchers and visiting industries.
During the conference, the visitors were able to learn about, among other things, the development of sensors for the detection of unbreakable material in mining and machinery wear; the use of nanotechnology to treat cancer; packaging with properties to extend the useful life of food and the contributions of CEDENNA to the development of nanosafety with OECD standards.
CEDENNA was born 13 years ago and is currently the most important nanoscience and nanotechnology center in the country and the only one in Latin America with a multidisciplinary approach. Since then, the institution has advanced to a stage of technology transfer through its developments and services, part of which were presented to representatives of various companies.
Frontier Science and Funding
“We are very happy with this activity that was carried out at CEDENNA, in order to connect what this Innovation Center does with the companies that can access its services and thus develop projects in the field of nanotechnology and nanoscience. This is part of a work that we have been developing with Innova and with our partners -among which is CEDENNA- to generate alliances and to activate the innovation ecosystem so that our country can move towards sustainable productive development”, explained Sergio Maureira, Deputy Director of Innova Chile of CORFO.
For her part, the founder and director of CEDENNA, the National Prize for Exact Sciences, Dora Altbir described the activity organized by CORFO as very interesting, “first, because it allows us to show the capacities that we have as a center of excellence. But also because it opens up the possibility of getting to know a series of companies with which we can link up, either to develop products together, carry out specific services and find out what they are doing, the challenges they face and thus nurture our work”.
Developments such as high-specificity filters and sensors, or the incorporation of nanoparticles in the manufacture of containers and industrial textiles, were favored during the visit by the sum of these three factors: frontier research in nanotechnology, business innovation and financing for the sustainable development of new industrial capacities in Chile.
From oceans to childhood disability
The attendees highlighted the possibility of learning about frontier technology and the interconnections that emerged from the meeting.
The founder of the Green and Blue Research company, Ariel Martínez Gavilán, pointed out that his company seeks to develop science and technology to contribute to nature and that experiences like this are essential for a scientific-technological venture like his. “It was a very interesting activity, because the worlds of industry and business converge with that of science and I believe that Chile should do more of this type of activity. Bringing science together with companies is mainly talking about the future and this was a very good contribution.”
Erika Astorga STEM Entrepreneur 2022 and SME Women Award 2014 was "happy with this link with the Universities since here we find a high potential for research and development, in addition, we as entrepreneurs can catapult, bring to a real object all the ideas that here They come from theory and we provide the practical part”.
Rayen Álvarez, representative of DOI SPA, a company that has been developing products for children with disabilities for 17 years and is advancing towards developments for adults, made direct contact with those who can open up new perspectives of solidarity and business. “The invitation to this center has been an impressive head start with respect to incorporating nanotechnology into the area of disability in products, in what means improvement for people with disabilities in general. I am leaving happy after seeing all the materials and what is being done and what we could do with Corfo hand in hand with the center”.
Diana Reyes, commercial manager of the National Center for the Piloting of Mining Technologies, agreed with the above: “I was pleasantly surprised by the level of technological development that CEDENNA has, the technologies, the innovations with which they are working. It is a very good initiative and project in which we work collaboratively with other universities”.
