The Center for Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, CEDENNA, will represent Chile in an interlaboratory test to be carried out among the OECD countries to determine the "Solubility and dissolution rate of nanomaterials". Last July, the Nanosafety Unit participated in a first informative meeting, in which it was indicated that prior to the development of this test, a training day must be completed that will take place in September in Schmallenberg (Germany). The doctor in Microbiology, Claudia Muñoz, who recently joined the Center to carry out this experience, will participate in this conference.
Once this authorization phase is completed, the tests will be carried out in CEDENNA's Nanobioassays laboratory, with the expectation of presenting the results at the end of this year. CEDENNA has the only Nanosafety laboratory in the country and has represented Chile in the OECD, since 2019, participating in the meetings of the Working Party on Manufactured Nanomaterials (WPMN) or working group on manufactured nanomaterials).
Leading this team is Dr. Mauricio Escudey, who highlights the importance of participating in this trial proposed by the international organization, as it demonstrates the growing visibility that Chile is acquiring in the work to determine the safety of nanomaterials, as well as the commitment of the center in this important area.
In the WPMN meetings, the member countries of the OECD send representatives of different specialties (scientists, inventors, economists, political agents, etc.), to discuss the best way to regulate everything related to manufactured nanomaterials (or created by the man), develop new procedures, adapt the existing ones and propose experimental procedures that allow international validation of the results associated with new nanomanufactured products.
The proposals and projects developed under the protection of the OECD, have special emphasis on establishing which will be the methods recommended by the OECD for the analysis and characterization of nanomaterials; appropriate occupational exposure limits; environmental quality standards; the labeling of consumer products containing nanomaterials and other related issues.
What is decided within the framework of these meetings is relevant for Chile since, as a member country, all kinds of regulations that arise from these working groups will be immediately available for application.
