Nanotechnology at the service of the Mining Industry 04/11/2022

Submitted by carmen.ibarra on Wed, 05/18/2022 - 19:57

Nanotechnological sensor monitors metal detachments from mechanical mining shovels in real time. The solution improves processes and the safety of workers. It also increases the useful life of mining equipment. A problem present in the crushing process is the grinding of metallic elements from the teeth of mechanical mining shovels. For this reason, Cedenna presented a new technological solution to detect the fall of these teeth, avoiding accidents and work stoppages.

Thinking Better: What Artificial Intelligence Can't Do for Us

Submitted by olabrin on Mon, 08/11/2025 - 12:27

Can a machine imagine, doubt, or intuit like a human being? In his recent column published on Radio Cooperativa, Dr. Juan Escrig, a researcher at CEDENNA and Dean of the Faculty of Sciences at the University of Santiago de Chile, invites us to reflect on the limits of artificial intelligence and the irreplaceable value of human thought.

Through his analysis, Dr. Escrig argues that the future is not programmed, but imagined, reminding us that creativity, intuition, and the ability to question remain the exclusive domain of individuals.

The dean of the Faculty of Sciences at the University of Santiago and CEDENNA researcher, Dr. Juan Escrig Murúa, recently published an opinion column on Radio Cooperativa, in which he analyzes in depth the impact that the convergence of nanotechnology and artificial intelligence is having on a global level.

Air pollution in Santiago: How can nanotechnology help us?

Submitted by olabrin on Mon, 06/30/2025 - 19:39

Did you know that, beyond the visible smog, there is an even more silent threat in the air we breathe?

In his recent column published by Radio Cooperativa, Dr. Juliano Casagrande, director of the CEDENNA Center Program at USACH, addresses one of the most invisible and dangerous aspects of pollution: nanoparticles.

These ultrafine particles, a product of combustion and industrial activity, can penetrate deep into the human body, causing severe health effects. But they also open up a key field of action for science.
